2014 BMW X4

The German carmaker has just unleashed its latest creation, the BMW X4, which is the newest member of the “X” lineup. And it comes as no surprise that BMW also came up with a new acronym for the class, SAC (Sports Activity Coupe). The X4 is built on the same platform as the BMW X3 and is basically considered the X6’s smaller brother, featuring several elements that offer it an extra touch of aggressiveness.

Front passengers now have a lower position, as the seats have been lowered by 20 mm compared to the X3. However, unlike a traditional coupe, the new X4 offers comfortable space for five passengers and features folding rear seats (40:20:40 ratio). Other features that differentiate it from the X3 are the variable sports steering with Performance Control as standard and the leather wrapped steering wheel with shift paddles. And since the X3 has just received a facelift, the X4 also got all the new goodies.

Under the bonnet, BMW offers six engine choices that produce between 184 and 313 hp. The entry level one is a 2.0-liter diesel unit that produces 184 hp (135 kW) and 270 Nm (199 lb-ft) of torque, while the most powerful one is the X4 xDrive35d, powered by a 3.0-liter six-cylinder engine that delivers 313 hp (230 kW) and 630 Nm (456 lb-ft) of torque that accelerates from 0 to 62 mph in 5.2 seconds. All engines are available with an eight-speed Steptronic automatic transmission, expect for the entry level xDrive20d which comes with a six-speed manual. However, when equipped with the automatic transmission, the xDrive20d is the most economical X4, achieving a fuel economy of 5.2 liter per 100 km (45 mpg). With the manual, fuel consumption goes a little higher, 5.4 liters (43.5 mpg).
