Even though Audi is making big steps with its electric vehicles technology, it looks like they’re not ready yet. The Audi R8 e-tron, the German carmaker’s electric flagship, is an impressive vehicle but it’s production still has an uncertain future. According to British magazine Autocar, Audi has already built 10 fully functional units, but, apparently, these models will never go on sale.

Why? According to German officials, the decision was made because battery technology hasn’t evolved enough to allow longer driving range and faster charging. Also, battery price is still extremely high and would make the car’s final price too high. And Audi thinks all these will keep customers away from the electric model.

However, the company doesn’t think building the electric R8 was wrong, since they managed to gather a lot of knowledge about electric powertrains, knowledge which might be used in the future to create an electric car.

The final version of the Audi R8 e-tron is able to accelerate from 0 to 62 mph in 4.2 seconds and reaches an electronically limited top speed of 125 mph, while the estimated driving range is around 135 miles.
