BMW 4-Series Coupe

The production version of the new BMW 4-Series made its debut earlier this year, at the Detroit Motor Show and it seems that the other important American motor show, the L.A. Auto Show will be the place of another interesting premiere, the hybrid version of the coupe. The official name hasn’t been revealed yet, but looking at the German carmaker’s naming policy for the 3-Series, it will probably be called the BMW ActiveHybrid 4.

The 3-Series also gives us a few more clues about the upcoming 4-Series hybrid, which will probably be powered by the same powertrain. This means that under the bonnet we’ll have the six-cylinder 3.0-liter gasoline engine currently used by the the 35i versions of other models, mated to an electric motor capable of producing around 55-hp. The way this hybrid powertrain works is that the electric motor will assist the gasoline unit, but there’s also the possibility of all-electric driving, for a limited range of almost 3 miles and with the top speed not going above 46 mph (75 km/h) (in this case the gasoline engine will kick in). The total power output of the upcoming ActiveHybrid 4 will be around 340-hp and performance figures will probably also be quite similar to the sedan’s (the 3-Series gets from 0 to 62 mph in 5.3 seconds).

Even though we’re pretty sure about these specs, BMW will have the final word and we’ll know everything about this car after its debut at the L.A. Auto Show in late November.
