Maserati Alfieri Concept

The Maserati Alfieri concept has just been unveiled by the Italian manufacturer at the 2014 Geneva Motor Show and everyone immediately started talking about it as a replacement for the GranTurismo. However, it looks like the concept has another mission, to preview a future smaller coupe, that will compete with other sports cars like the Jaguar F-Type or the Porsche 911.

The Geneva prototype has been created by a team of designers led by Marco Tencone, under the strict supervision of Lorenzo Ramaciotti, the head of Fiat’s design department. Besides previewing the upcoming coupe, the concept also reveals the design direction Maserati will adopt for future models. Even though it is inspired by classic models such as the 1957 Maserati 3500 GT, the new model is an image of Maserati’s future. According to Ramaciotti, “The Alfieri is a transition point between 100 glorious years of history and the future that is opening up before us. I can’t honestly say that we’ll see this car in production in the next two years, but I’m certain we’ll see something very similar [..] We wanted the Alfieri to test future design paths”, Ramaciotti explains. “The car is very aggressive yet subtle in style, forceful but understated.”

Many people are already talking about the Alfieri as a true successor of the old Gran Sport, which was built by Maserati between 2001 and 2007. Even though the model was replaced by the Gran Turismo, the current coupe is bigger, more powerful and a lot more expensive, so it’s not actually the Gran Sport’s successor. But it looks like the Italian carmaker is looking to fix this and release a more affordable coupe. Of course, when we say “more affordable”, we’re speaking in Maserati terms, because the production version will start at around 70,000 Euros (almost $100k). The sports car will be built on a shorter version of the Quattroporte and Ghibli platform and will be powered by two V6 engines producing 325 and 405 hp. As Ramaciotti says, seeing a production version of this concept within the next two years is almost impossible, since Maserati is already preparing an extremely important launch, the Levante luxury SUV. And they’ll probably focus all their attention on that model, which is seen as extremely important in the brand’s future.
