Many Maserati fans were afraid that the Italian brand will embarrass themselves by basing their upcoming SUV on the Jeep Grand Cherokee. But we’ve got good news from Modena, because recent information revealed that the Italians understood how important a model’s identity is and have decided that the two models will share as little as possible. Even though financially it would be a lot better, Maserati announced that their SUV will only borrow a few electronic components from its American brother.

The upcoming Maserati SUV, called Levante and inspired by the Kubang concept, will share most of its technology with its “smaller” brothers, the Quattroporte and the Ghibli. Apparently, the SUV’s structure will be based on components borrowed from the two sedans, while the body will be built almost entirely out of aluminum, to reduce total weight.

The engines used will also be the ones currently powering Maserati models. We’re talking about the twin-turbo 3.0-liter V6 unit that delivers 410-hp and 405 lb-ft (550 Nm) of torque and the flagship powerplant, the twin-turbo V8 that produces 530-hp and 523 lb-ft (710 Nm). For diesel fans, Maserati promises a completely new engine that will deliver 275-hp and 442 lb-ft (600 Nm). All engines will be mated to an eight-speed automatic transmission.

In the beginning, Fiat was planning to build the Maserati SUV at Chrysler’s Jefferson North plant in Detroit, but the high demand for the Jeep Grand Cherokee (also built there) made them switch the SUV production to one of the factories in Italy.
