Post image for Mercedes admits not producing the E-Class Coupe AMG was a mistake

Since almost each important model in the Mercedes-Benz lineup received a high-performance version from AMG, a lot of us were extremely intrigued when the German carmaker announced there will never be an AMG version of the E-Class Coupe and Cabrio. Many, including us, thought the two models were very, very suitable for an AMG version, but it seems that Mercedes’s didn’t share this opinion.

However, it looks like things have changed, because German officials said it really was a mistake not creating AMG versions for the E-Class Coupe and Cabrio. In a recent interview, the company’s product manager, Gerd Jungingerm revealed that the decision was made ever since the current generation’s early development stages. He said that, at that time, the AMG division had a different strategy and he expressed his regrets, because the E-Class is now considered a perfect car to wear an AMG badge.

We could say “we told you so!”, but it would make no difference now. More important is something else…will Mercedes try and repair this mistake by launching a new E-Class Coupe AMG based on the current generation? We sure hope so. So far, the most powerful E-Class Coupe is the E550 version, powered by the 405-hp V8, whose resources are more limited that its predecessor’s, the CLK AMG, which was built until 2009.
