In a bold marketing move, Chevrolet released a photo of a Camaro decorated with two number candles “5” and “0”, wishing Happy Birthday to the Ford Mustang which celebrates its 50th anniversary this year. Chevrolet, which has an important muscle car heritage, also honored the Mustang as the true pioneer of this market segment and came up with a nice birthday wish: “Here’s to another 50 years of rivalry. Your friend, Camaro.”

Alongside the image, Chevrolet also released a short statement saying that “the healthy competition between the Chevrolet Camaro and Ford Mustang became a driving force for constant improvement.” Mark Reuss, the Executive Vice President of GM Global Product Development, added that “For five decades, the Camaro and the Mustang have been battling it out in every possible setting. These two cars have been striving to beat each other on the track, on the drag strip and on the streets. That competition is a big part of why both cars are so amazing, and so popular, today.”

As part of the 50-year celebrations, Ford will unveil a special edition of the Mustang at the New York Auto Show, which will open its gates this weekend. The Ford Mustang 50th Anniversary edition comes in two color options, Wimbledon White (the color used on the first Mustang) and Kona Blue. The features list includes chromed elements on the headlights, instrument cluster with aluminum inserts and several “50th Anniversary” badges marking the special moment. The anniversary edition will be available with the Performance Pack package for the 420-hp 5.0-liter V8, the only engine option. Ford has also announced that only 1964 units will be built (we don’t have to tell you why this number, right?).
