Porsche 918 Spyder

Three years ago, the Porsche 918 Spyder concept made its world debut at the Geneva Motor Show and the whole world was impressed by the idea of a spots plug-in hybrid. This month, the 2013 Frankfurt Motor Show marked the debut of the model’s production version and today Porsche has announced that production has started at the company’s Zuffenhausen plant. 918 units will be built during the one year and a half production run and the starting price for the model is 750,000 Euros (a little over $1 million). And if you think that’s a little pricey, let us tell you that the high-performance “Weissach” version will cost 855,000 Euros ($1,150,000). What’s even more interesting is that you’re actually paying for less, because the high-performance version is stripped of all the optional features on the regular version. However, as expected, the hefty price tag didn’t scare customers away, 200 units already being ordered in the United States alone.

As for the car, it is widely regarded as the unofficial successor of the Porsche Carrera GT and the 917 racing sports car. But unlike these, the new Porsche supercar features a plug-in hybrid powertrain that delivers a total power output of 887-hp and 1,280 Nm peak torque, all these with an official fuel economy of 33.6 mpg on the combined cycle. Ever since Porsche decided to produce it, the car proved its capabilities, becoming the fastest production car on the famous Nordschleife part of Nurburgring. The record-breaking time was 6 minutes and 57 seconds, but Marc Lieb, the guy driving it, said that the time could’ve been even better.

Like we said, the 918 Spyder’s story started at the 2010 Geneva Motor Show, when it was only a concept. After the great feedback, Porsche developed several prototypes and the final result is a 3,600-pound supercar ready to challenge any Ferrari or McLaren out there but which can also run in 100% electric mode or with an incredible good fuel economy. Official performance numbers indicate that the 918 Spyder needs 7.7 seconds to get from 0 to 125 mph and 22 seconds to get from 0 to 186 mph.
