Right now, the sound and performance of the AMG lineup is given by the 5.5-liter engine, which powers almost all models produced by the high-performance division based in Affalterbach, but it looks like things are about to change. Because according to several sources inside Mercedes, the engine will soon be retired and the new S63 AMG will be the last model to feature the powerplant.

The V8 engine delivers 585-hp and 900 Nm of torque and complies with the most recent pollution standards, but even so, its presence on future models might not make sense for the German carmaker. Why? Well the AMG head, Tobias Moers explained that the unit won’t be able to deliver more horsepower without increasing CO2 emissions level. Also, Moers didn’t say whether the high-performance AMG versions of the other two upcoming models based on the new S-Class, the S63 AMG Coupe and Cabrio will be powered by this engine. The upcoming CL-Class which is based on the S-Class has already been previewed by a concept that made its debut at this year’s Frankfurt Motor Show. There are also some voices claiming that the 5.5-liter will also be used on the facelift for the CLS63 AMG, considering the engine complies with the most strict pollution standards.

As for the unit’s replacement, it seems that Mercedes and AMG will go for a 4.0-liter V8 for smaller models, while bigger ones will get a hybrid powertrain built around the same 4.0-liter. But there’s not many information available, except some rumors claiming that the engine will feature two turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder units just like the recently launched A45 AMG. This configuration might also power the upcoming C63 AMG and the future Porsche 911 rival.
