BMW X7 Spartanburg California

Last week, BMW started production of the new BMW X4 at the Spartanburg plant in California, also celebrating 20 years of production on American soil. From 1994 until today, the Spartanburg facility transformed from a “simple” assembly plant to a true landmark for BMW SUVs, with the BMW X3, X5, X5 M, X6 M and now the X4 being manufactured over here.

The X4 production start ceremony was attended by Norbert Reithofer, chairman of BMW’s board of directors, who took this opportunity to announce a new upcoming SUV from the German carmaker, the BMW X7. As most media anticipated lately, BMW wants to add a bigger model to its “X” lineup, one that will be placed above the X5. According to Reithofer, the model will be called the BMW X7, will offer seven seats and is scheduled to debut in 2017.

The upcoming SUV will be built at the Spartanburg plant, with around one billion dollars scheduled to be invested by BMW to prepare the facility for the mega-SUV’s production. The money will be used to accommodate the new SUV production and to also increase the factory’s capacity from 300,000 annual units to 450,000. The increased production also means that around 800 new jobs will be available, which will bring the total employees number up to 8,000. Following this massive investment, the Spartanburg facility will become BMW’s largest global production center.

Speaking about the upcoming X7 and the Spartanburg investment, Reithofer said: “With the BMW X7, we are developing another, larger X model, which we will produce at our U.S. plant for our world markets. This decision once again underscores our commitment to the U.S.”
