Volkswagen XL1 Production Delivery

The German carmaker is extremely proud to announce the delivery of the first Volkswagen XL1 but what’s interesting is that unlike other similar events, they didn’t publish any fancy press release, instead all they did was release a photograph with the customer being handed the keys to his new car. The ultra efficient vehicle’s price in Germany is 110,000 Euros ($150,000), a huge price caused by the expensive materials used to build the car.

According to Volkswagen, only 200 XL1 units will be built and sold through a complex sales process. Despite the project’s high costs, its research value is priceless and many technologies used on the XL1 will probably find their way one day on production Volkswagens. The XL1 is powered by a plug-in hybrid powertrain that incorporates a two-cylinder diesel engine and an electric unit. The TDI diesel produces 48-hp, while the electric motor provides an additional 27-hp. The entire aggregate is powered by a Lithium-ion battery pack and is mated to a seven-speed DSG automatic transmission.

The car is capable of running in 100% electric mode for up to 35 miles (50 km) and when the diesel engine is running, the XL1 gets a fuel economy of 261 mpg (0.9 liters per 100 km) and produces 20 grams of CO2 per km (32 grams/mile). To be honest, that’s quite remarkable and the Volkswagen XL1 went straight into the record books for the world’s most fuel efficient vehicle. Not that it would matter too much for a car in this category, but the XL1 is able to accelerate from 0 to 62 mph in 12.7 seconds and reaches a top speed of 100 mph.
